| The origins of the company are
in South Somerset where the firm began under the direction
of Francis Hart at Long Sutton around 1811. The name Palmer
dates from around 1850 when William Palmer entered into
partnership with George Hart. By 1869 the main office
was established in Yeovil.
The Snell family became involved during the 1930’s
with the last of the Snell’s retiring in the mid-1960’s.
It is since then that the exciting growth and development
of the company has taken place.
In terms of numbers of offices we now have 41 trading
as Palmer Snell and 8 as Chappell & Matthews.
In 1987 the businesses was acquired by the London &
Manchester group, to enable us to fund more rapid growth.
They were acquired by Friends Provident in autumn 1998.
In August 2002 Friends Provident Estate Agencies Limited
was acquired by Countrywide plc.
