| In June 1889 a 39 year old insurance
agent and Methodist lay preacher, Beresford Adams, opened
in business on his own account as a house and estate agent
at 22 Newgate Street, Chester. As he slowly built a business
from among his chapel friends and a widening circle of
clients and acquaintances, he could scarcely have imagined
the business he had started, and which still bears his
name over 100 years later, would embrace a staff of 250,
36 branches, and a turnover measured in millions.
Through the South African War, the World War of 1914/18,
the General Strike and the Depression of the 30’s,
the business of Beresford Adams survived and expanded.
The entry of Henry Dean Adams into the partnership changed
the company name to Beresford Adams & Son, which,
with the complication of future generations, was later
dropped.
Released from the RAF at the end of the Second World
War, Philip Adams became a third generation partner
of the firm and Beresford Adams began to play their
part in the post war prosperity of Chester. To make
way for theGrosvenor Precinct, the Newgate Street premises
were demolished and the firm moved to the very centre
and heart of Chester at The Cross.
In February 1987 Beresford Adams became part of Nationwide
Estate Agents with a network of over 450 offices.
In 1994 Nationwide decided to sell their estate agency
business to Countrywide plc, at which time the Beresford
Adams name was relaunched as a separate 29 office subsidiary
of the Group. Through recent expansion Beresford Adams
now have 36 offices and benefits from the advantages
of national influence and connections added to local
expertise, reputation, and integrity.
It is our intention to continue to expand our business
and to continue with the traditions which have seen
us selling houses successfully for over a century.
