Bairstow Eves Kent Limited
was formed in November 1994, following the acquisition
by Hambro Countrywide plc of the Nationwide Estate Agency
Group. The branches were re-branded in early 1995.
The founders of the original practices of Bairstow
Eves were Mr Charles Eves, who commenced business at
Goodmayes, Essex, in 1899 trading as C Eves and Son,
and Mr Stanley J Bairstow, who traded under his own
name from an office in Ilford from 1926. In 1953 these
two Essex based estate agency practices amalgamated
under the name of Bairstow Eves & Son and thereafter
continued trading as a residential estate agency partnership
from both offices.
John Bairstow, Stanley's son, opened the first new sales
office at Brentwood in Essex, in 1956 and during the
ensuing 14 years the practice gradually expanded, opening
a further eight offices in Metropolitan Essex and mid-Essex
areas.
Expansion, by organic growth and acquisition of other
estate agency practices continued until 1982, by which
time it had become one of the largest residential estate
agencies in the south-east of England with 33 offices.
In June 1982 Bairstow Eves plc became the first estate
agency practice to be offered a listing on the Stock
Exchange. Trading continued as an independent until
l984, when an offer for a controlling interest was accepted
from Hambros Bank who, in order to develop the Mortgage
service opportunities, were anxious to become involved
in the estate agency operation. In March 1985 Mann &
Co merged their operation with Bairstow Eves. Following
the merger, Hambros Bank proposed and agreed with the
shareholders that this enlarged estate agency operation
should be known as Hambro Countrywide plc. Bairstow
Eves Kent Limited was formed in November 1994, following
the acquisition by Hambro Countrywide plc of the Nationwide
Estate Agency Group. The branches were re-branded in
early 1995.
In 2002 the group decided to re-brand all of the subsidiary
companies with the Countrywide name. The trading name
was therefore changed to Bairstow Eves Countrywide.
